Daniel does the Devil!

2009 January 28

Daniel Craig’s new movie, I, Lucifer, which is still in production in the UK is based on a 2003 novel by Glen Duncan. The synopsis of the story is that God is giving Satan a last shot at redemption: Satan must live out a blameless life as a human. Slick negotiator that he is, Lucifer negotiates a ‘try before you buy’ period. One month; London.

Of course He has no intention of taking God up on His offer. Lucifer simply wants to put a body through as much drugs, sex, and other vices as possible. But inhabiting a human body gives rise to feelings the Ol’ Devil never thought possible.

It sounds interesting to say the least, and I may just have to read the novel before the film gets its release. Mr Craig is playing Lucifer and the film will also star Ewan McGregor.

It’s been a busy time for Mr Craig, there’s been Flashbacks of a fool, The Quantum of Solace, then Defiance in 2008. Not bad going. I wonder if 2009 will be as prolific. I hope so, I’ve enjoyed everything he’s been in recently, apart from the Golden Compass. I though it was very badly put together, but that’s not his fault.

I really enjoyed Flashbacks of a Fool not just for the obligatory shot of Daniel naked! But it had a excellent story and it held me until the very end and of course it also had the very lovely James D’Arcy in it too! What more could I want!

Flashbacks of a Fool is already out on DVD, Quantum of Solace is out on 23rd March and as yet no date has been given for the release date for Defiance. My orders are already in!

Naked Rugby Powerade

2009 January 28

Whilst driving home yesterday, my attention was brutally dragged off from the road by a billboard poster showing rugby player Paul Sackey in a freeze frame rugby dive. Not unusual in itself except that the guy was completely naked.

Now far be it from me to object to huge pictures of naked rugby players being displayed all over the country, but this is the second batch of posters to feature naked sports people by the same company.

Powerade, a subsidiary of the Coca Cola company used naked sports people last year in a similar ad campaign for their “innergear” concept.

Once again I’m not objecting to the use of fit naked sports people, note I say people, as women have also been used in the campaign, I just think that they could have come up with a different concept. It’s not really original is it!

The new campaign features Steve Borthwick, Paul Sackey and Shane Williams to name but a few (see below).

I have to say that I think the first ad campaign photos, which coincided with the start of the 2008 Olympics, are much better. The covering of the rugby players in a mud like substance spoils the pictures. Last years advertising campaign featured Gregor Tait, Phillips Idowu and Rebecca Romero. The photos are much more polished!

I have to say that after spending hours slogging through this novel that clever research does not make up for a lack of plot!

It could have been an ingenius genesis for “the planet of the apes”, but it’s really about how American lawers and the judicial system works with new technologies, genetic engineering and  patenting genetic material.

 A missed opportunity.

Michael, stick to writing about dinosaurs!

Where would you wake up?

“If there were no restrictions, where would you like to wake up tomorrow?” This was the subject of a short film I found on Ryan’s blog, it really made me smile. It’s a great idea.

So, where would you?

My answer has got to be in my own bed, in my own apartment in South Beach, Miami.

Another Yorkshire UFO sighting

Since the Conisholme incident, I’ve been keeping an eye and ear open for other local UFO sightings. This just popped up on my RSS feed for UFOs in Yorkshire!

ufo

Location of Sighting: Horbury, West Yorkshire
Date of Sighting: 2nd January 2009
Time: 7.13pm
Witnesses: L. Foster

Witness Statement: I saw an orange light approaching from the north east.. travelling south west, at approx 7.13pm. At first I thought it was a plane, however the colour of the light looked wrong. I watched it for about 2 minutes, waiting for it to pass over head.. to see if it was a plane or a helicopter. I couldn’t hear a noise (like an engine) but it was quite a distance away. Suddenly its just changed direction and ‘zipped away’… it went up very quickly – as what I can only describe as a 2 o’clock angle.. the orange light just got smaller and smaller till it disappeared. It was a clear night, no clouds.. it just disappeared!

Where’s the beef with Manorexia?

2009 January 27

It used to be that to become a male model you had to have a look that was different or classed as asthetically pleasing, and a bloody good body. This means, beefed up and lean, with big arms, nice pecs and a ripped set of abs; the sort of body that both guys and girls would drool with envy over.

These days the buffed up adonis has been pushed aside by the manorexic man. Have the meek inherited the earth already? It seems that the answer is yes in the case of fashion. Buffed, ripped male models have been slowly replaced by their skinny opposites. Male models are now required to have little or 0% body fat and weight less than 140lbs it seems.

Truly male skeletons in clothes have become the in thing. But what has caused this change in catwalk selections?  Has it been the type of clothes dictating the type of models needed to wear them? Are the designers responsible for a new generation of sickly looking youths? Does the finger of blame lies squarely on the shoulders of fashion designers who continue to tell the world what they should be wearing and how they should look.

Or does the finger of blame actually lie with the general clothes buying public. We have to admit that no one has to follow what they say, but in the end we really have no choice if we want to buy clothes in the shops. We as the public are limited to what we can buy, by the retailers stocking what they think we want.

Has body image for men suddenly become more sinister? For a long time now doctors and specialists have been telling us we’re getting fatter by the year, but now quite the reverse is happening, they’re also telling us that we’re getting too thin. It seems that we just have to go to extremes on either side of the scale from obesity to the newly named manorexic.

I can’t help thinking that actually, the only people to blame for all this angst about body image is ourselves, for really caring what others think about us. Should we really give a damn?

When punk fashion designer Vivian Westwood was asked her opinion on what people should be buying next season, she replied, ‘I’ll tell you what I’d like them to buy–nothing.  I’d like people to stop buying and buying and buying.’

Holocaust Memorial Day

“May we never forget”

Although I’m not Jewish, I do feel it’s important to mark this day. It’s important to stand up and not allow the deniers to have their way.

As I said, I’m not Jewish, but it’s not only the Jews that lost their lives in the holocaust, it has been estimated that over 55,000 gay men and lesbians also lost their lives, although it’s impossible to know the real figure.

Back to work

2009 January 26
by Mr M

Well the weekend is over and I’m back teaching again this morning. Today is a little more unusual than most as I’ve had a visit by my Uni tutor who has sat in on one of my teaching sessions to do a professional evaluation of my teaching ability. It’s all part and parcel of my Uni course that I started in September. I’m happy to report that he’s given me some good feedback and has written a pretty nice evaluation of what he saw. Obviously, he’s had to put some comments about what I could have done differently, but all in all there’s nothing to complain about.

The weekend was quite a quiet one, “the beloved” was feeling a little down as his skin condition has started up again, he’s fed up and is considering going to a private clinic to have tests done. I’ve talked him into waiting a while longer to see if the last batch of medication works before paying for medical attention.

Because he was so down, I decided to take him out for lunch on Saturday, somewhere nice, so we ended un in Bibi’s Criterion in Leeds city centre, it’s a reproduction art deco italian style restaurant. The food is fantastic, and a 3 course meal including drinks came to just under £90 ($125). I’m please to say that it did cheer him up.

Saturday night was spent watching a blu-ray version of National Treasure – Book of Secrets, it’s a fun piece of fluff and weas very enjoyable.

Off to bed around 11.30pm.

Sunday we awoke around 8.30am, we took the dog for a walk around the park, and then came home and sat and had a little quiet read for an hour before going out. We’d been invited to Sunday lunch by Katie, one of “the beloved’s” gym friends. She’d recently moved into a new housed and wanted us to have a look. We set of to get there for around 1pm.

Katie had cooked a lovely meal, roast chicken, parsnips, roast sweet potatoes, broccoli and carrots with onion gravy. It was delicious. I carved, both of them are useless with a sharpe knife.

After the meal we sat and watched silly TV; Police Adacedmy 5 was on, but we talked through most of it. We left around 4.30pm and got back home just in time for the light to fade.

Sunday evening was spent with the TV off and books out. A nice quiet end to a nice weekend.

Shame Mondays have to spoil weekends!
