Church of Solitude

A while back I posted some photos of Penistone’s St Johns Church in the fog. They were a dark and brooding set. Tonight, I thought I’d go out in the freezing cold snow and take some more. Strangely enough they came out quite similar. I deliberately didn’t use the flash, but allowed the sodium street lights to illuminate the grave yard. Hope you like.

Apparently Carol Thatcher, daughter of Maggie, has been sacked from the BBC’s “One Show” for likening tennis supremo Andy Murray’s hair to that of a golliwog’s.

This was not done on air, but in a private conversation after the show had gone off air. People are saying it’s political correctness gone mad. But is it?

Just because she was off air, doesn’t mean she was off duty. If she was still officially at work, then she must obey the rules and regs just like anyone else who works in one of the BBC’s many offices. Just because she’s classed as “talent” doesn’t exempt her from them.

The word “golliwog” is banned at the BBC, and she broke the rules. It’s a clear distinction, if you’re at work, you’re subject to the rules, whether you think you’re having a private conversation or not.

A commentator on the BBC’s Today programme this morning said that the BBC “are frightened of their own shadow at the moment “. For those that don’t know who Andy Murray is, he is white! (see above)

So is the comment harmless, is it an over reaction? Probably, besides, not all golliwogs have black faces!

When I woke this morning it had been snowing on and off almost all night. The snow on Ms Lemon was a couple of inches thick. That was at 8am. It’s now nearly 2pm and it has been snowing heavily all day so far. I’m wondering if I’m going to make it home from Huddersfield later this afternoon!

Apparently it’s the worst snow weather we’ve had in 18 years in the UK. I think I’m the only one in the UK who actually bothered to go into work!

Wii Knackered

I’ve bought a Nintendo Wii this afternoon, consequently “the beloved” an I are knackered after spending 6 hours solid playing 10 pin bowling, tennis, golf and baseball!

My legs and arms feel like they’re falling off. I thought this machine would be fun. Instead it’s turned into a cardio nightmare.

Someone please pass me a stiff Bacardi and Coke and a bar of chocolate!

If you’re thinking that the subject of this drawing may be slightly familiar, you’d not be wrong. This composite drawing is the result of a survey by Gillette based on answers to poll questions about the most desirable features of famous British men. Responders to the survey were both men and women. They then created this picture of the “ultimate British male”.

You may be wondering who all the bits belong to, well, they used Hugh Grant’s hair, Daniel Craig’s eyes, Orlando Bloom’s nose, rugby player Jonny Wilkinson’s mouth, racecar driver Lewis Hamilton’s skin and Ewan McGregor’s jaw.

I wonder what other bits were suggested? But of course it’s only a clever exercise in marketing, because you just know that the tabloids are going to pick up the story and give Gillette some free coloumn inches.
